My name is Kathryn Alcid (she/her/hers), and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State.
Since I was younger, I had always been drawn to having deep conversations with people, and finding comfort and joy in being able to provide support and help others with whatever was going on in their lives. Spending my formative years living in the Philippines, Seattle, and New York has provided me with the privilege to attend schools with diverse populations and work in different industries. These experiences provided me with interactions with many people of different identities (varying in ages, cultural, ethnic, and racial identities, and socioeconomic statuses), and this exposure has given me some ability to relate to and understand various experiences.
In my experience, I have learned that each person is unique, in that their upbringing, experiences, and values play a role in making them unlike anyone else. This also means that a person’s story will never be the same as another’s, which can feel lonely when we are navigating trials and life changes.
I do believe that everyone has the capacity for healing, growing, and changing. My favorite part of being a therapist is being able to get to know each unique individual, providing a space for them to process their past, helping them discover their authentic selves, and exploring how they can make changes in their lives to align their future with their true selves. My approach to therapy is primarily person-centered, operating from a non-judgmental stance to best understand each individual and their needs. I believe the most important component is the therapeutic relationship, and it is necessary to establish a space of trust and safety. My higher education program was rooted in multiculturalism and social-justice, which I aim to incorporate in my foundation as a therapist. My professional experience has been in community mental health, where I have had the opportunity to serve a diverse clientele that has helped me hone my personal therapy style.
